What is the Lipoprotein (a) Test For Lipo?

What is the Lipoprotein (a) Test For Lipo?

Heart Diseases are one of the top causes of death around the world. Now, many people know about the standard blood tests, like cholesterol and sugar tests. However, there is another important test that helps to check the risk of heart problems. This test is called the lipoprotein (a) test, which is also known as the Lp (a) test.

In this blog, we will explain what the lipoprotein (a) test is, why it is important, how it is done, and more. We will also explain how this test is different from other blood tests, like the lipo test or the liposuction blood test.

What is Lipoprotein (a)?

In order to understand more about this test, you should know a little more about lipoproteins. These are tiny particles that were made of fat which is also known as lipid and protein. Lipoproteins are needed in your body as they carry cholesterol through your blood.

There are many types of lipoproteins, like LDL, which is bad cholesterol, HDL, which is good cholesterol, and VLDL. Now, lipoprotein (a) or Lp (a) is a special type of lipoprotein. It looks like LDL, but it has an extra protein called apolipoprotein (a), which is attached to it.

Your Lp (a) is not affected much by your diet or lifestyle. Hence, it is mostly controlled by your genes. So, it means that if you have a family history of heart problems, you might have high Lp (a) levels even if you eat healthy and exercise properly.

What is the Lipoprotein (a) Test?

As the name suggests, the lipoprotein (a) test is a blood test that measures the amount of Lp (a) in your blood. Through this test, your doctor can understand your risk of getting heart disease, stroke, and other health problems that are linked to your age.

But how is this test different from regular cholesterol tests? Well, your total cholesterol, LDL, and HDL might be normal, but if your Lp (a) is high, you can still be at risk.

Now, there are also some people who confuse the lipoprotein (a) test with the lipo test or the liposuction blood test. The truth is that these tests are not the same. The lipo test usually checks your general lipid levels, like total cholesterol or triglycerides.

On the other hand, the liposuction blood test is done before you undergo any cosmetic surgery, like liposuction. It helps to ensure that you are healthy enough for surgery.

Why is the Lipoprotein (a) Test Important?

The Lipoprotein (a) test is important because high levels of Lp(a) can lead to serious health problems. Yes, high levels of Lp (a) can pose a danger even if other cholesterol levels are fine in your bloodstream. Hence, this test lets your doctors get a clearer picture of your hidden heart risks. So, here are some more reasons why this test matters:

1. Hidden Risk of Heart Disease

People with high Lp (a) levels can have a higher chance of:

  • Heart attacks
  • Stroke
  • Aortic valve narrowing (aortic stenosis)
  • Blood clots

These problems can happen even if you eat healthy, exercise, and have normal cholesterol levels. It is mainly because the risk is genetic. As a result, it is often hidden until a serious health problem suddenly appears. It is also the reason why getting this test done early can save your life. The lipoprotein (a) test also helps you to catch silent risks before they turn into emergencies.

2. Family History of Heart Problems

If someone in your family had a heart attack, stroke, or heart-related death at a young age, you may have also inherited high Lp(a) levels. You may look and feel healthy, but your body might still be at risk. The Lipoprotein (a) test can help you find out and act early to protect your heart.

3. Normal Cholesterol, But Still At Risk

You might have normal LDL or HDL levels, but if your Lp (a) is high, your heart risk is still much greater than it seems. Hence, the regular lipo test will not show this hidden danger. This is why only the Lipoprotein (a) test can detect any hidden conditions that you may have developed.

How is the Test Done?

The lipoprotein (a) test is very simple and quick. It is because this type of blood test takes only a few minutes. Besides, it is usually done at a clinic, hospital, or diagnostic lab.

Steps:

  1. A healthcare worker will first clean your arm with an alcohol swab. This is done to kill any germs present on your skin.
  2. Then, a small needle is used to take a blood sample from your vein. Usually, it is taken from the inside of your elbow or the back of your hand.
  3. Then your sample blood is collected in a small tube and sent to a laboratory for testing.
  4. You can usually return to your daily routine immediately after. The test results are typically ready within a few days, depending on the lab.

In most cases, no fasting is needed before the test. However, some doctors may ask you to avoid food or drinks (except water) for 4-6 hours, just to be cautious.

Who Should Get the Lipoprotein (a) Test Done?

In reality, not everyone needs this test. But, doctors often recommend it to people who have the following-

  • A family history of heart attacks or strokes at a young age.
  • Personal history of heart disease without high cholesterol.
  • High cholesterol that doesn't get better with treatment.
  • Early signs of heart problems on scans or tests.
  • Risk factors include diabetes, high blood pressure, or smoking.

Even if your lipo test results look okay, you might still need this test if your doctor suspects a hidden heart risk.

What Do the Results of the Lipoprotein (a) Test Mean?

Your Lipoprotein (a) test results will show the amount of Lp(a) in your blood. The units may be in mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter) or nmol/L (nanomoles per liter), depending on the lab.

In General:

  • Low Risk: Less than 30 mg/dL or less than 75 nmol/L.
  • Moderate Risk: 30-50 mg/dL or 75-125 nmol/L.
  • High Risk: More than 50 mg/dL or more than 125 nmol/L.

If your Lp (a) level is high, it does not mean you will definitely have a heart attack. But it means you should take steps to reduce your overall risk.

What Can You Do if Your Lp (a) is High?

There is no specific medicine yet approved to lower your Lp (a) directly. However, researchers are working hard to find effective treatments. But, the better part is that you can make appropriate lifestyle changes and manage your health conditions that can increase the risk of heart disease. You can follow these-

  • Controlling other risk factors: Keep your LDL (bad cholesterol) as low as possible. Also, manage high blood pressure, diabetes, and other conditions that affect the heart.
  • Eating healthy: A heart-friendly diet includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, lean proteins, and healthy fats like olive oil or nuts.
  • Exercising regularly: Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most days. Brisk walking, cycling, or swimming are all great options.
  • Avoiding smoking and alcohol: These habits can raise your risk of heart problems even more, especially when Lp(a) is already high.
  • Regular check-ups: Keep seeing your doctor for follow-up tests and personalized advice.

Conclusion

If you are concerned about your heart health, it is recommended that you get a lipoprotein test done. At Langersculpt, we offer you advanced testing, which includes the lipo test and liposuction blood test. It will help you stay informed as well as healthy. So, book your appointment today for expert care and accurate results.
