Breas-t reconstruction is the surgical process of rebuilding the shape and look of a Breas-t, especially in women who have had mastectomy or Breas-t removal, or partial Breas-t removal, to treat Breas-t cancer. It involves using own tissue in the form of flaps, either from the abdomen or the back, prosthetic implants, or a combination of both with the goal of reconstructing a natural-looking Breas-t. Flaps offer a larger, softer Breas-t. The best candidates for implants tend to be thinner ladies with smaller Breas-ts.
Surgery is done under general anaesthesia and hospital stay may be for 2-3 days or slightly more. Most patients can start to get back to normal activities within 4 to 6 weeks. If implants are used without flaps, the recovery time is usually shorter, by about 2-3 weeks. Reconstruction does not restore normal sensation to the Breas-t, but partial sensations may return over a period of months. Patients may need more than one surgery to fully reconstruct the Breas-t, including nipple reconstruction. Nipple reconstruction, however, is usually done under local anaesthesia as an office procedure usually 3-6 months after the Breas-t reconstruction.
