Following childbirth and ensuing lactation, the Breas-ts can be deflated and slide down as a part of the ageing process. Associated with that, the abdominal skin and muscle tone can also reduce, giving rise to stretch marks, skin and fat bulges, and excess fat deposition over the abdomen. Often Breas-t enhancement and liposuction or Abdominoplasty (or tummy tuck) can be combined for an excellent result in body contouring. This combined procedure is called a Mummy make-over and is an excellent tool in treating the mid-aged lady. Sometimes Breas-t size increases so much that it causes Breas-t, back and shoulder pain, with skin fungal infections on the under surface of the Breas-t. This causes severe mental, physical and social stress to the lady affected by this. For these unfortunate patients, Breas-t reduction or reduction mammoplasty surgery is a magic bullet that takes care of all these issues by reducing the size of the Breas-t.

Breas-t reduction is usually performed under general anaesthesia. The duration of the surgery varies between 2 to 4 hrs depending on the extent of reduction needed.
Types of Breas-t Reduction include:
1. Liposuction: This involves reducing the fatty component of the Breas-t without excision of glandular tissue. It can provide a small amount of reduction only and is suited to older patients with mainly fatty tissue. It avoids any major incisions and ensures quick healing in the post-op period.
2. Vertical or “Lollipop” Breas-t reduction: This is suited to patients with mild to moderately large Breas-ts. It involves an incision around the brown part of the Breas-t (areolae) running down the centre of the Breas-t. It produces a single vertical scar with a circular scar around the nipple areola.
3. “Donut” Breas-t Reduction: This is a very popular technique in patients who have mild Breas-t enlargement. It involves an incision around the areola only. The scar is hidden in the brown skin and settles very well over a period of time.
4. Inverted ‘T’ or wise pattern: This is one of the most common techniques of Breas-t reduction suitable for all candidates. It involves an inverted T scar with a circular scar around the nipple areola.
Precautions needed in the post-op period:
