Following childbirth, a lady usually develops evidence of poor skin and muscle tone, with appearance of stretch marks, skin and fat bulges, weakened or separated abdominal muscles with excess fat over the abdomen and love handles (waist) region. Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is a cosmetic surgery procedure used to address all these issues and make the abdomen thinner and more firm, removing the loose hanging skin. The procedure involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen in order to tighten the skin and muscle of the abdominal wall. The placement of the incisions is discussed with the patient before surgery, so as to keep them hidden even in their most revealing garments. Stretch marks in the lower abdomen can also be reduced dramatically by this procedure. Tummy tuck is also very effective procedure to treat large ventral hernias and skin problems caused by overhanging loose skin.
Abdominal muscles can be strengthened and tightened through a tummy tuck that reduces back pain because it helps the patient to stand up a little straighter. It can be effectively and safely combined with liposuction and as a Mummy makeover procedure, when coupled with Breas-t Enhancement & other body contouring procedures.
The procedure is usually performed under general anaesthesia. The procedure involves excision of excess skin along with underlying tissue and repositioning of the umbilicus. Depending on the extent of laxity, the procedure can be a mini-abdominoplasty where the umbilicus is not repositioned, total abdominoplasty with the recreation of a youthful navel/umbilicus, or an extended tummy tuck. The final scar following surgery is hidden in the panty line, as in a caesarean section.
Overnight hospital stay after the procedure is recommended. Depending on the extent of the surgery and the comfort of the patient, the patient may be discharged on the same day or the hospital stay may extend to 2 days post-operatively. Drains are left in place usually for 3-7 days, and the patient requires a rest of about 1-2 weeks. In the initial week to 10 days, the patient is advised to avoid standing up straight and walk with a slight stoop to avoid strain on the suture line. Strenuous activities like weight lifting, jogging, and aerobics are restricted during this period. A compression garment should be worn at all times for at least a month. The patient should take plenty of rest and consume a balanced diet. Blood thinners should preferably be stopped 5-7 days before upto 2-3 days after surgery. The recovery period for abdominoplasty is a minimum of 2 weeks. After this period, most people can return to work. The results of this procedure are permanent. However, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and avoiding fluctuations in weight are essential to maintain the longevity of results.
