Rhinoplasty, or a nose-job, can include a functional aspect to improve breathing, a cosmetic improvement for better tip definition, narrowing the nose, reducing a hump or bump on the bridge of the nose, augmenting the nasal dorsum, or including both aspects. It can entail only soft tissue work, or bony cuts, or both. It can also require bone or cartilage grafts, sometimes also from the ear, or an implant. Other ancillary procedures such as chin implant or chin reduction surgery can be included along with rhinoplasty.
The surgery not only enhances the facial harmony by improving the proportions of the nose but also builds self-confidence. It corrects sinus problems, snoring, headaches, deviated septum, and constant nasal congestion.
After a rhinoplasty, one can expect swelling over the nose and some bruising around the eyes after surgery that will begin to improve by about a week to two weeks after the procedure. However, some swelling stays even after that. This gradually reduces over a few months, but the final result after rhinoplasty can only be seen by one year. Over the nasal tip, the swelling may continue to be seen upto three months or more. If bony cuts are made, an external nasal splint is usually applied for 10-14 days post operatively and another two weeks at night only to prevent inadvertent trauma.
Within 2 weeks following surgery, most patients can return to work and resume full activities.
Rhinoplasty can be done at any age after completion of facial development, which is 16-17 years in females and 17-18 years in males.
